Practical guide
When someone looks up the price of renting a boat in Altea, they are not really just looking for a number. They are trying to understand how much they will actually end up paying, what is included in the booking and which items are worth checking before confirming: fuel, skipper, deposit, insurance, weather conditions or extras.
At uCharter, we prefer to explain it clearly. On our website you will see that you can book a half-day or full-day trip, with or without a skipper, and that boat rental in Altea starts from €220. But the final cost depends on the kind of plan you want to enjoy and how you want to experience the day.
That is why we have prepared this guide. We want to help you compare properly, book with peace of mind and avoid that very common feeling that the price seemed to be one thing at first, but then several extra costs started to appear along the way.
What you will find in this guide
- What the base price of a boat rental usually includes
- What is paid separately and worth checking before booking
- How costs change depending on the duration or whether you choose a skipper
- What to ask when comparing quotes without surprises
- What options you have if you do not currently hold a licence
Enjoying the sea in Altea starts with understanding exactly what your booking includes.
What affects the price of renting a boat in Altea
The price of a boat trip does not depend only on the boat itself. It also changes depending on the duration, whether you want to sail with or without a skipper, the route you would like to take and the type of experience you are looking for. A relaxed half-day trip for swimming and anchoring close to the coast does not cost the same as a full-day outing with a skipper, extras and more detailed planning.
At uCharter we depart from Marina Greenwich in Campomanes, Altea, and you can book either a half-day or a full-day trip. We also offer options with or without a skipper, so you can choose the format that suits you best. If you hold a Navigation Licence, you can drive the boat yourself. And if you prefer to relax or do not have a licence, you can also go out with a professional skipper.
This is important because people often think they are comparing “boats”, when in reality they are comparing different ways of enjoying the same day at sea. And that is where the real price differences begin.
It is also worth bearing in mind that, according to our general terms and conditions, a full rental day is equivalent to eight hours. This means that the difference between a half day and a full day is not just a small commercial detail: it changes the actual boating time, the expected fuel consumption, the kind of route you can plan and, in many cases, even the type of outing that is worth booking.
What the base price usually includes
As a general rule, the base rental price covers the use of the boat for the booked period as well as access to the equipment and preparation needed to carry out the trip normally. In our case, there is always support beforehand too: we advise you before departure, answer your questions and help you choose the option that best fits the plan you have in mind.
That may sound obvious, but it is not always the case when someone is comparing options in a hurry. Some websites show a very attractive rate and leave too many details unexplained. We prefer you to have a more realistic picture from the start.
Another point that is often included, and worth paying attention to, is coverage. On our website we explain that our boats have fully comprehensive insurance with excess, and that passengers are covered during the trip. In other words, when comparing a price, it is not enough to look only at the starting figure, but also at the level of support behind that booking.
What is paid separately and worth checking before booking
Fuel
Fuel is one of the points that raises the most questions and, at the same time, one of the most important factors in understanding the real cost of the trip. In general rentals, fuel is not included. We hand over the boat with a full tank and it must be returned the same way at the end of the trip.
This does not mean that you are inevitably going to face an unpleasant surprise. In fact, if you tell us what kind of route you would like to take, we can guide you on the approximate fuel consumption depending on the type of outing you have in mind. That is a much more useful way to estimate your budget than looking only at the starting rate and forgetting everything else.
Skipper
The skipper is the other major factor that can change the final price. If you have a licence and would like to drive the boat yourself, you can choose a trip without a skipper. If you want a more relaxed plan, are coming without a licence or simply prefer to enjoy the day without thinking about manoeuvres, navigation or anchoring, the option with a skipper is usually the most comfortable.
Not all bookings work in the same way. In a general rental, the skipper may be part of the quote depending on the format you choose. In some specific experiences, however, the skipper is already included from the outset. That is why it is not enough to compare a figure: you need to understand what service you are actually booking.
Security deposit and insurance: why they are not the same thing
The security deposit is not exactly a “cost”, but it is still part of the amount you need to factor in for your trip. According to our general terms and conditions, the minimum deposit is €500 and it can be as high as €2,000 on some boats. We also specify that, once the boat has been returned and any extras have been settled, the refund is made within 48 hours after the rental.
Why is there a deposit if there is already insurance? Because they do not serve the same purpose. Insurance provides coverage, but the deposit acts as an operational guarantee against damage, outstanding charges, losses, breakages, ordered provisions or situations resulting from negligent use. Understanding this difference avoids many misunderstandings: insurance gives support, but the deposit remains a key part of how the rental works.
In other words, you should not view the deposit as a “hidden extra cost”, but as a temporary guarantee that forms part of the normal booking process in this type of service.
Weather, changes and cancellation
Another important point when talking about the real price is knowing what happens if the weather does not cooperate. On our website we explain that, if weather conditions do not allow safe navigation, we will offer to change the date of your booking at no extra cost. In addition, for full-day rentals you can consult the conditions of our Weather Guarantee.
Our general terms and conditions add a more specific criterion: if on the day the rental starts there is rain or an easterly wind above 22 knots, we may agree a date change with you and, if it is not possible to find an alternative day, cancel the rental and refund all amounts paid in full.
As for cancellations made by the customer, it is important to remember that conditions may vary depending on the product booked. That is why we always recommend reviewing the specific policy of the activity or boat before confirming.
Optional extras and avoidable costs
This is where the perception of price changes the most. Some extras are completely optional, such as specific drinks, catering or even paella on board. You can also bring your own food, drinks or picnic and enjoy them during the trip. The key is to have this clear before booking, so you can decide what is part of your plan and what is not.
The price changes depending on the duration, whether you choose a skipper and the kind of plan you want to enjoy.
How the price changes depending on the type of trip
One of the most useful ways to understand the real cost is to stop thinking in terms of “boat price” and start thinking in terms of “type of experience”. That makes it much clearer what you are paying for and why.
Half-day trip without a skipper
If you already hold a Navigation Licence and want a simple trip to swim, anchor and return with plenty of time, this is usually the most straightforward option for keeping the budget under control. In this case, the usual factors to consider are the base boat price, the fuel consumed, the security deposit and any extras you may want to add.
It is a very attractive option for couples, families or small groups who prefer to organise the day at their own pace and do not need a more structured service.
Full-day trip with a skipper
When the plan is to spend more hours at sea, forget about the navigation and simply focus on enjoying the day, the skipper becomes much more important in the decision. The price is usually higher, yes, but the experience also changes: you relax more, you can focus on swimming, the scenery or your group, and leave the technical side in the hands of a professional.
In this case, the sensible way to think about the cost is as a sum of boat + skipper + fuel + optional extras. Comparing it directly with a half-day self-drive trip does not always make sense, because the service is not the same.
Private experience with a more fixed price
There are experiences where much more of the price is clearly defined from the start. A good example is our sunset boat trip in Altea, which starts from €240 and includes a professional skipper and fuel. When the plan is more clearly defined, it is usually much easier to understand the budget from the outset.
This type of product works very well for anyone who does not want to build the price piece by piece, but would rather book a specific experience with a much clearer cost structure.
What you should ask before comparing quotes
If you want to compare properly and not be swayed by an attractive headline price, the best thing to do is always ask for the quote with the same level of detail. That will allow you to see whether you are genuinely comparing like with like or whether each option includes different things.
- Exact date or approximate time slot
- Number of people
- Half day or full day
- With skipper or without skipper
- Route or type of trip you would like to do
- Estimated fuel consumption
- Security deposit applicable to that particular boat
- Optional extras
- Change or cancellation conditions
You can start with our availability page, where you will clearly see the options for half-day or full-day trips, with or without a skipper. And if you do not yet hold a licence, you can also consider whether it makes more sense for you to go out with a skipper or take the next step and complete the Basic Navigation Licence course.
This last point not only changes your autonomy for future trips. It can also change the way you understand the price of your future bookings. On our website we explain that the course is face-to-face, lasts 6 hours, is obtained without an exam and also includes a 10% discount on your first rental with us.
Frequently asked questions about the price of renting a boat in Altea
Is fuel included?
In general rentals, no. The boat is delivered with a full tank and must be returned the same way at the end of the trip. That is why, before booking, it is worth asking for a fuel estimate based on the route you would like to take. This allows you to assess the real cost of the trip more accurately and compare options more effectively.
Why is there a security deposit if there is already insurance?
Because they do not serve the same purpose. Insurance provides coverage, while the deposit acts as a temporary guarantee against possible damage, outstanding charges or incidents during the rental. It is not a permanent cost, but a standard part of this type of booking, and it should be taken into account from the beginning to properly understand the final price.
Can I rent a boat if I do not have a licence?
Yes, as long as you choose the option with a skipper. If you want to go out without a skipper, you need the minimum relevant licence. That is why, when assessing the price, it is also important to be clear from the start whether you are looking for a self-drive trip or a more comfortable experience with a skipper included.
